In 2020, Justin Wells enters his second season as an assistant coach with Belmont University Volleyball.

He brought nearly a decade of collegiate coaching experience to the Bruin sideline plus an extensive club coaching career.

“We are extremely excited to announce the addition of Justin to our staff. His passion for recruiting, training and developing the student-athletes will be instrumental in moving this program back to the top of the OVC,” Head Coach Katelyn Harrison said.

“Justin is passionate, enthusiastic and carries himself with the highest degree of integrity. He is motivated towards becoming a great teacher and will be a wonderful representative of Belmont Volleyball on the recruiting trail and in the community. We are thrilled to welcome Justin and his wife to Nashville.”

Wells arrived at Belmont after serving for the last year as an assistant coach at USC Upstate. While with the Spartans, he was responsible for coaching and training setters, middle blockers and oversaw blocking in practice and matches. Wells increased the team’s blocking production from 1.56 in 2017 to 2.30 in 2018 in team blocks per set. He also helped increase the middle’s production in kills per set from 1.27 to 2.45.

Before his stint at Upstate, Wells spent one season as an assistant coach at Southern Illinois where the Salukis had a pair of All-Missouri Valley Conference Second Team performers. He worked primarily with the setters and focused on the in-game offense.

Prior to his single season at SIU, Wells logged a season as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Tennessee. The Vols finished the season 17-14 capped by a win over 23rd-ranked Kentucky in their final home match of the year.

"I am very honored and humbled to accept the position of assistant coach under Head Coach Katelyn Harrison and join this great Bruin Family. I'm thankful to athletic director Scott Corley, Coach Harrison and the entire administration for this opportunity to be a part of the Belmont community,” Wells said.

“I have great respect for Coach Harrison's career and what she has done as an assistant and know that she will be an incredible head coach and boss. With her leadership, we will take the volleyball program back to its winning ways and grow these and future Bruin athletes into great people, solid students and successful athletes."

Wells began his coaching career at Lindenwood University - Belleville, serving as the head coach for both the men’s and women’s teams. He oversaw the development of five All-Conference players and coached a pair of USCAA All Americans during his three years with the programs.

While playing collegiately for the Cardinal Stritch University’s men’s volleyball team in Milwaukee, Wisc., Wells spent his senior season as the team’s intern where his love of coaching grew.

Justin and his wife, Brianne, live in Nashville.
