Hilltopper Relays Track Preview

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – It's a field-heavy type of track and field meet this week for the Belmont track teams with only a select few Bruins in action at Western Kentucky's Hilltopper Relays.

Belmont's throwers will make the short trip to Bowling Green, Ky., to compete while the Bruins on the track take the week off to recuperate and prepare for the final month of the outdoor track and field season. WKU's meet begins Friday afternoon with a few more events in the field taking place Saturday.

The Bruin throwers hope this weekend's competition can help them continue working toward a season-long goal. The top 48 marks in the NCAA's East Region earn a trip to the NCAA East Preliminary Championships.

"These kind of meets are all opportunities for people to get regional qualifying marks," said Belmont Assistant Track Coach Joe Frye, who coaches the throwers. "Hopefully for the people who are on the bubble to do that, the more opportunities they have the more likely they are to be able to make it."

Belmont had two throwers – and four athletes overall – reach the NCAA East Regionals meet a year ago, including current senior Karly Hibbard (Edmonds, Wash.) in the javelin. She's outside the top-48 cutoff currently through two outdoor meets, but there are still five more dates on the calendar this season. That includes the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships on May 9-11 in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Other throwers the Bruins hope can break into Regional territory include sophomores Jessica Mattsson (hammer) and Maja Gustafsson (javelin), senior Stephen Gibson (hammer) and freshman Bo Miller (javelin).
