NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's tennis team opened up the 2020 spring season with a 7-0 home sweep over the Cumberland Phoenix at Ensworth Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
"Great win today. It is always great to start out the season with a win, but doing it without losing a match feels even better," said Director of Tennis Mauricio Antun. "We still have a lot of work to do, but I am excited for our next match on Monday and hoping that we can keep the momentum rolling."
The Bruins (1-0) jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage after capturing the doubles point. The doubles sophomore duo of Peyton Lee and Somer Henry kicked off the day with a 6-1 victory at the one spot. Next, the tandems of junior Erin Allen and sophomore Lauren Carelli, as well as freshman Taylor Trondson and junior Terra Sheldon, finished out with a pair of 6-0 sweeps over their doubles opponents.
Sheldon opened up the singles competition with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Stefanie Navaratnam in the four spot. Henry closed out the day, and the sweep, with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Jessica Hernandez of the Phoenix.
