NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont Softball completed the season sweep of crosstown rival Tennessee State on Wednesday at Rose Park. The Bruins (10-18, 6-13 OVC) never allowed the Lady Tigers (8-19, 4-15 OVC) to plate a run in the doubleheader winning, 12-0, in five innings, and 8-0, in six innings.
In the opening game, Belmont sent a runner over the plate in the bottom of the first frame, thanks to a triple by sophomore Kailey Brown (San Antonio, Texas) and a sacrifice fly by classmate Abi Ledbetter (Livingston, Tenn.). After a quiet second inning, the Bruins exploded in the bottom of the third inning.
Senior Cheyenne Cavanaugh (Spring, Texas) smashed her second homerun in as many games to open BU's half of the inning. Tennessee State went on to change pitchers twice but could not stop the hot bats of the home team. Doubles came from sophomore Lauren Veltri (Clarksville, Tenn.) and junior Audrey Lyle (Westlake, Ohio) and long singles from Ledbetter and freshman Kaley Varner (Cumming, Ga.) scored three runs before a triple by Cavanaugh cleared the base, adding two more runs. A double by Brown was enough to add an eighth run to put the game all but out of reach for TSU. For good measure, Belmont added more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, thanks to a three-run shot by Varner. The Bruins were able to easily take the game 12-0.
The scoring onslaught continued in the nightcap. BU tallied runs in the bottom of the first inning after loading the bases. The Veltri sisters each used long singles to plate four runs and the Bruins never looked back. Tennessee State leaned on the pitching of Raven Loveless to keep Belmont from adding additional runs for the next few innings. However, BU's defense squelched any attempt by the Lady Tigers to get into scoring position.
The Bruins carried their 4-0 lead into the sixth inning. Back-to-back singles from Alicia Veltri and classmate Georgia McKee (Frisco, Texas) opened the door for a deep Varner double to post the first run. Cavanaugh reached on a dropped strike and quickly moved to second base. Brown reached on four balls, loading the bases for BU. Ledbetter helped add a run before Lauren Veltri knocked the game winning single to centerfield, to hand Belmont the 8-0 win.
For the day, Lauren Veltri batted. 667, going 4-for-6 at the plate with a double and four RBI, to lead the team. Varner and senior Alicia Veltri (Clarksville, Tenn.) both batted .600 over the two games.
Belmont returns to action this weekend, opening a six game road stretch. The Bruins travel to Morehead State for a three-game series, April 10-11. Live stats will be available. Fans may follow the team's Twitter account (@BelmontSoftball) for live, in-game updates.
