CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Three Belmont women's soccer players were recognized with All-Conference honors, the Ohio Valley Conference announced on Thursday.
Junior forward Julie Garst and sophomore defender Rachel Vernon were awarded a spot on the All-OVC Second Team while freshman midfielder Avery Nowak was honored as a member of the All-Newcomer Team. The honors mark the sixth time in the last seven years where Belmont has had at least two members named to All-OVC teams.
Garst led the Bruins in scoring with seven goals, including three in the first two rounds of the OVC Tournament to help Belmont advance to the semifinals. The Franklin, Tenn., native earned her third consecutive All-OVC honor, being named to the All-Conference First Team in 2018 and All-Conference Second Team as a freshman in 2017.
Collecting 19 career goals, Garst is currently tied for the fifth-most goals in program history with Liz Jallo (1998). She is also tied with Tara Miller (1997-2000) for the seventh-most points in program history with 44.
Vernon helped Belmont's defense co-lead the OVC in shutouts with six in 2019, leading all Bruins' defenders in scoring with two goals in the process. The Suwanee, Ga., native earned OVC Player of the Week on Sept. 10 after helping pitch a shutout draw against Georgia and scored a goal to help lead Belmont to its first win of the season against Evansville.
Vernon's honor marks the second consecutive year where Belmont has had a sophomore listed on the All-OVC team.
Nowak has made key contributions for the Bruins this season, competing in all 19 matches and getting the nod for the starting 11 in 17 matches. The Oviedo, Fla., native scored a crucial goal in Sunday's OVC Quarterfinals at UT Martin in the 70th minute that allowed Belmont to advance to the conference tournament semifinals.
With Nowak's honor, Belmont has now had at least one player on the All-Newcomer team in five of the last six years.
Belmont continues its postseason run in the OVC Semifinals on Friday, facing Murray State at 3 p.m. at Houck Field.
