DELAND, Fla. -- The Belmont women's soccer team (4-11, 3-6 A-Sun) scored a goal in the final 60 seconds on double overtime to defeat Stetson (7-9-1, 4-4-1 A-Sun), 2-1, for the team's final regular season matchup on the road on Sunday afternoon. The win haled a four-match skid for the Bruins and improved BU to 3-6 in Atlantic Sun action.
Stetson used a set piece to get on the board first, just three minutes into the opening stanza. Belmont then immediately began working for the equalizer goal, attacking the Hatters' goal numerous times but was unable to convert. The Hatters were able to take their 1-0 lead into the break.
In the second stanza, BU intensified its pressure on both sides of the ball. The hard work paid off in the 62nd minute when freshman Bailey Kimbell (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) netted the unassisted equalizer off a boot from her left foot. Locked in a 1-1 stalemate, the already physical contest was cranked up a notch as both teams hunted for the gamewinner.
In the first overtime period, the Bruins recorded seven shots but were unable to find the back of the net. As the clock wound down into the final minute of the second overtime sophomore Kailee Hawkins (Raleigh, N.C.) delivered a perfect cross into the box for a header into the top right by classmate Megan Rock (Madison, Miss.) to give BU the 2-1 win.
"I am so proud of the team," said Head Coach Lisa Howe. "Today we worked hard and dictated the tempo and was able to pull it out in the end. We played one of our best games today."
Kimbell led the Bruins' offensive effort with five shots followed by senior Erica Carter (Spring, Texas), who notched four.
Belmont dominated in shots, 27-14, and corner kicks, 10-4.
Belmont wraps the regular season with a final game at Whitten Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Bruins host Lipscomb in the annual Battle of the Boulevard contest beginning at 1 p.m. BU will also take time to honor its seniors before kickoff.
