FT. MYERS. Fla. -- The Belmont women's soccer team (3-11, 2-6 A-Sun) was unable to hand a tough Florida Gulf Coast (9-4-2, 6-0-2 A-Sun) team its first Atlantic Sun loss of the season on Friday night and fell, 2-0.
With the pace of play being controlled by the Eagles, Florida Gulf Coast was able to take an early lead, netting its first goal of the night in the 25th minute. FGCU was able to block a shot by junior Alex Morgado (Suwanee, Ga.) late in the half and keep the Bruins off the board heading into the break.
The second stanza saw the Eagles notch their insurance goal in the 63rd minute as they worked to extend their win streak to 11 consecutive games. Belmont came alive in the final 27 minutes with shots coming from sophomore Brandi Phillips (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Morgado that unfortunately were halted by FGCU's goalkeeper, Stephanie Powers. Florida Gulf Coast then maintained possession over the waning minutes and cruised to the 2-0 victory.
FGCU dominated in shots, 12-5, but Belmont held the slim advantage in corner kicks, 2-1.
Morgado led the Bruins with two shots. Freshman netminder Nicole Berner (Randolph, N.J.) finished the night with three saves.
