NASHVILLE, Tenn. – On the heels of an outstanding weekend of play that led to back-to-back Atlantic Sun road victories, a pair of Belmont women's soccer players was named A-Sun Players of the Week. Sophomore Lauren Paynter (Danville, Ky.) was named Player of the Week while senior Jessica Rix (Carmel, Ind.) was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week. It is a career first for both.
Sophomore forward Lauren Paynter led the Bruins in points this weekend with a total of five after a pair of Bruin wins in Atlantic Sun match-ups. Against USC Upstate, the Danville, Ky., native picked up an assist on BU's first goal of the night before netting the Bruins' fifth and final goal of the contest. Two days later, Paynter tallied a pair of assists, one of which was on the gamewinner, in Belmont's 3-2 double overtime win over ETSU.
"Lauren Paynter was very difficult for defenders to contain. She provided us with several scoring opportunities, even some that didn't show up in the stats.
Senior defender Jessica Rix anchored a Bruin defensive line that earned its first shutout of the season against USC Upstate to open a weekend of Atlantic Sun play. Two days later, the Carmel, Ind., native netted the game winning goal and her first goal of the season in a double overtime decision at ETSU.
"Jessica Rix was instrumental in us picking up our first shutout of the season on Friday night," Howe said. "She followed that up with over 100 minutes on Sunday, and provided many dangerous serves. Her last free kick was perfect, and it is exactly how we draw it up on the board."
Belmont returns home for action at Whitten Soccer Complex on Thursday. The Bruins host Campbell beginning at 6:30 p.m.
