NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's soccer team (0-2-0) will host first-time opponent Minnesota (2-1-0) in a special midday contest on Tuesday at Whitten Soccer Complex. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
The Gophers, who was chosen to finish sixth in the preseason Big Ten race, are wrapping up a three-match road swing when they take on the Bruins tomorrow afternoon, after picking up wins over Western Kentucky (2-1) and Vanderbilt (2-1) over the weekend.
Four Minnesota players lead the team in scoring with one goal each – Katie Bethke, Katie Shelander, Shari Eckstrom, and Molly Rouse. UM's primary netminder is Cat Parkhill, who has a GAA of 1.00. She also has a .786 save percentage with 11 saves in the early season.
The Bruins, who are still on the hunt for their first win of the season, saw their second consecutive overtime match in as many outings last week when they faced off against first-time opponent Clemson in their home opener. A goal by sophomore Lauren Paynter (Danville, Ky.) knotted the game at one in the 83rd minute and a strong defensive effort sent the game into overtime. However, the Tigers were able to find the back of the net in the 97thminute to take the contest, 2-1.
Paynter's goal was the seventh of her career while freshman Jennifer Collins (McCordsville, Ind.) recorded her first collegiate assist. Junior Sari Lin (Carefree, Ariz.) and freshman Nicole Berner (Randolph, N.J.) split time between the posts, combining for seven saves.
Belmont's Department of Athletics will be hosting a pre-game tailgate at Whitten Soccer Complex beginning at 12:30 p.m. Complimentary hot dogs and drinks will be available.
