NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Several members of the Belmont University Women's Basketball program are trading in their jerseys for medical scrubs as they prepare for a nine-day medical mission trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this week.

The group from BU, consisting of rising seniors Ellie Harmeyer (Kenosha, Wisc.) and Maddie Wright (Chattanooga, Tenn.), rising sophomore Maddie Cook (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), with the addition of Joi Jones, who recently completed her two-year graduate assistantship with the program, plus alumnae Hannah Harmeyer (Kenosha, Wisc.) and Sally McCabe (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.), will be accompanied by Belmont women's basketball program founder and coach emeritus Betty Wiseman and a team from Brentwood Baptist Church for the trip.

"I'm continually amazed at the opportunities that our student-athletes have to impact people all over the world with their talents," said head women's basketball coach Bart Brooks. "We have some extraordinary young women in our program, and we are grateful they are able to spread their joy and love of Christ at home and abroad."

"Betty Wiseman had a vision when she started the women's basketball program at Belmont to impact and shape the lives of young women through their participation in sport," Brooks continued. "She has taken that vision and helped hundreds of student-athletes spread their wings and inspire positive change all over the world through mission trips."

The group representing Belmont will work alongside medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, dental hygienists and pharmacists, as they serve the people of Rio as well as participate in evangelism events through sport with Wiseman.

"I'm so proud to be affiliated with an athletics department and university that values more than performance in sport. I couldn't be more proud of the young women who will represent our program in Rio for the next two weeks," Brooks said.

The team is scheduled to return to the Nashville area on June 8.
