BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Fueled by podium appearances and qualifications for the finals on day two, Belmont Men's Track and Field stood in third place after the opening day of the 2020 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championship.

Senior Braden Carei (Uniontown, Pa.) was the first Bruin to power through the podium after taking third in the pole vault with a height of 4.57m. In the weight throw, junior Ryan Sheldon (Anchorage, Alaska) and senior Corey Claiborne (Milton, Ga.) finished seventh (16.42m) and eighth (15.85m), respectively, adding much needed points to Bruin tally.  In the heptathlon, senior Drake Mitchell (Nashville, Tenn.) stood in second place after the first day of competition, posting impressive results in the shot put and high jump, notching top-three finishes in both and winning the long jump. He finished day one of the event with a total of 2,690 points.

On the track, sophomore Jacob McLeod clinched the gold medal in the 5000m with a blistering time of 14:45.32 after blowing by his opponents on the final stretch of the race.

"It feels great," McLeod said after receiving his medal. "Overall, it was a great team effort. Coach helped us set up a great race strategy, and the guys really executed well. I knew I had the opportunity to earn big points for the team so I committed to my move and refused to back down."

Senior Kaden Kieffer (Dillsburg, Pa.) earned a qualifying spot in finals of the 400m after crossing the line in 50.00, winning his heat. The Distance Medley Relay team of Kieffer, freshmen Finn Birnie (St. Austell, United Kingdom) and Harrison Grzymkowski (Commerce, Mich.), and sophomore Wyatt Womack (Marietta, Ga.) battled to take third overall with a time of 10:20.70.

The Bruins will aim higher as Day 2 begins of the OVC indoor Championships on Thursday morning. Live results will be available and the second half of the day of competition will be streamed live on ESPN+.
