NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Belmont University Men's Track and Field team will see split action this weekend with a preview of the OVC Indoor Championship facility at the Samford Indoor Invitational and vying on a familiar track at Vanderbilt during the Music City Challenge.
There will be athletes from 17 schools competing at the Samford meet, including host-Samford, Alabama State, Arkansas State, Chattanooga, Emory, Furman, Georgia Southern, Hinds CC, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Louisiana-Lafayette, McNeese State, South Alabama, Azusa Pacific, South Carolina State, Tulane, as well as OVC foe Tennessee State.
The meet will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the men's pole vault, long jump and weight throw and will conclude with the 4x400m relay at approximately 4:40 p.m.
Many Bruins have seen action at the Birmingham CrossPlex and know what to expect but the weekend is an opportunity for the program's newest members to get familiar with the facility that will host the 2020 OVC Indoor Championships in two weeks. The coaching staff will be looking to gain a clearer picture of who will compete in what events to represent BU at that meet based on this weekend's performances.
The sprints and jumps corps will use this weekend as a conference tune-up while allowing others to build on impressive marks from earlier in the season. Senior Drake Mitchell (Nashville, Tenn.) will vie in the high jump and assist with the 4x400m relay. Senior Corey Claiborne (Milton, Ga.) will continue to fine tune his efforts in the throwing events and build on his indoor record-toppling hot streak. Classmate Braden Carei (Uniontown, Pa.) eyes building on work this season in the pole vault.
Several distance runners will see action at the Music City Challenge as they also gear up for the conference showdown later this month. The 5000m races begin around 8 p.m. on Friday while the 3000m races kick off at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
