JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Belmont University Track and Field senior Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) made his collegiate debut on the NCAA stage on Thursday morning, competing in the Hammer Throw at the NCAA Division I East Regional Preliminary in Jacksonville, Fla., hosted by the University of North Florida.
"Stephen capped his season off with a great experience and I'm happy that he got to experience this," said Assistant Coach Joe Frye. "He's represented Belmont very well throughout his time on our squad, and he's definitely left his mark at Belmont."
Gibson, who punched his ticket to the Regional after his performance at the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championship where he clinched bronze in the event earlier this month, faced some of the nation's best performers in the Hammer Throw in his Flight. He finished 37th overall in the event with his best toss coming in at 56.07m (183'11").
"To bring three throwers to this meet definitely shows some progress for our squad, but I think it's more of a reflection of our program's commitment to a well-rounded team," Frye continued. "Coach Langdon has played a big part in that, and we got lucky to have some very committed seniors this year who were hungry to do something big. All three finished up placing higher than they were ranked coming in."
