NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Junior goalkeeper Cameron Petty made noteworthy strides in his 2019 campaign under head coach David Costa.
In his sophomore season, Petty started nine matches and appeared in 10 for a total of 833 minutes on the pitch. He finished 2019 with a 1.51 goals-against average, good for fourth-best in the Southern Conference and 10th best in program history.
The Nashville, Tenn. native captured his first-career victory in the Bruins' 3-1 road win over the VMI Keydets on Oct. 26. Petty logged three saves and a .750 save percentage between the pipes versus the Keydets.
Petty dominated when it mattered most for Belmont in the SoCon Tournament. He kicked off the first round of the tournament with his first-ever shutout over VMI by a score of 4-0 on Nov. 5 at E.S. Rose Park.
He extended his clean sheet streak to two matches, and helped send the Bruins to their first-ever SoCon Tournament semifinal, with a 2-0 shutout of ETSU in the quarterfinal on Nov. 8.
Overall, Petty finished with three or more saves in five matches last season and an average save percentage of .682.
Is there a new hobby you picked up during quarantine, or one you are still trying to master?
"I actually started to learn magic tricks during quarantine. So far its been a challenging skill to learn and a great way to keep busy while staying inside. I am sure it will help entertain the boys on our away trips this coming fall."
Name one person at Belmont that positively impacted you last year.
"Nathan Adam was the professor for my first audio engineering class in the fall semester and really jumpstarted my journey through this major. He was an incredible teacher and inspired me to continue creating music while making the best sounding recordings possible."
What are some career or personal goals you want to set for yourself in the upcoming season?
"A SoCon championship ring and NCAA tournament appearance are the goals of everyone in the team. I cannot wait to kick off the season with this group and I know we will be able to achieve these goals."
Given the choice of anyone in the world, who would you want as a dinner guest?
"Joel Zimmerman, aka Deadmau5, has been a huge musical inspiration for me ever since I started playing instruments during middle school. His passion to learn every part of the music industry, including engineering as well as show production, has influenced me to continue learning and perfecting my craft. I would love nothing more than to have at the least a thirty minute conversation with Joel."
If you could pick one word to describe the Belmont Men's Soccer team what would it?
"Dedicated. Every man on this team knows that being a Belmont athlete is a privilege that is earned and not given. We all know that we have to give our all in order to achieve our goals as well as build a strong community within and outside of our team."
