NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University men's basketball received the 2019-20 Ohio Valley Conference Team Sportsmanship Award, the league office announced Friday.
Voted on by the student-athletes and coaches of the respective sports, the team awards are bestowed upon the Conference squads deemed to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior as outlined by the OVC and NCAA. Included in the areas for evaluation are the conduct of student-athletes, coaches, staff and administrators and fans.
"Sportsmanship is a foundational tenet of our program, and we appreciate the OVC recognizing us in this way," Belmont head coach Casey Alexander said. "Our seniors Seth, Michael and Tyler have set a remarkable standard for our returning and incoming players to emulate."
This marks Belmont's fifth OVC Team Sportsmanship Award in eight years of OVC membership (2013-14, 2014-15, 2016-17, 2018-19, 2019-20).
Belmont (26-7) won OVC regular season and tournament titles this past season and earned national Top 25 poll votes for the ninth time in 10 years.
Belmont University men's basketball has earned postseason invitations 14 of the last 15 seasons, including eight berths to the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins have won 19 conference championships since 2006 - third-most nationally over that span (Gonzaga, Kansas). Belmont is one of only six NCAA Division I programs outside the Power 5 to post Top 100 RPIs nine consecutive seasons (BYU, Gonzaga, Saint Mary's (CA), San Diego State, Wichita State). Belmont is one of only eight NCAA Division I programs to win 19 or more games 15 consecutive seasons (BYU, Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Louisville, Michigan State, San Diego State). Belmont University men's basketball boasts an NCAA-leading 17 CoSIDA Academic All-America selections since 2001 and is the only NCAA Division I program to make the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Honor Roll every year of existence.
