Campbell, South Ranked By D1Baseball

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - D1Baseball recognized Belmont junior catcher Jackson Campbell as one of the top 50 junior hitters and sophomore pitcher Joshua South as one of the top 50 sophomore pitchers in NCAA Baseball. 

With the rankings based on analytical perspectives and four weeks of 2020 statistics, Campbell came in ranked No. 25 while South came in ranked No. 33. 

Campbell came in with an overall rating of 88.2 and had a plate discipline rating of 78.8, according to D1Baseball. D1Baseball gave Campbell a rating of 78.5 for hit ability and an 89.3 for game power. 

According to D1Baseball, plate discipline is a measure of how well a batter controls the strike zone. Hit ability measures a batter's ability to hit and reach base while game power is based on a player producing extra-base hits and getting to showcase the power shown in batting practice, D1Baseball states. 

South came in with an overall rating of 87.6 and had a zone control rating of 80.9, according to D1Baseball. The organization gave South a 90.5 rating for pitch ability and an 85.4 rating for durability. 

Zone control is how well a pitcher controls the strike zone with strikeouts, walks, wild pitches and hit by pitch, D1Baseball states. According to D1Baseball, pitch ability is the pitcher's ability to pitch and uses statistics such as WHIP, FIP and OppSLG and durability is based on innings pitched and batters faced. 

Campbell reached the top 10 in six offensive categories in the OVC and hit six home runs, good for 19th in NCAA Baseball in 2020. The Russellville, Ky., native led the OVC in total putouts with 145 and finished the year with a .339 batting average, leading the team in slugging percentage (.768) and RBIs (19). 

South was named the OVC Preseason Pitcher of the Year by the OVC, holding a top 10 spot in six statistical categories in the OVC. The Cookeville, Tenn., native held a 2.42 ERA and came up with 26 strikeouts to go with two wins in 26 innings of work in 2020, collecting OVC Player of the Week honors during the season's opening week in the process.
