NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont Baseball opens its season on its home turf for the 18th consecutive year on Friday. To kick off the 2019 campaign, Belmont will play host to Illinois State for a three-game series February 15-18. First pitch for the season is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Friday, February 15th at E.S. Rose Park. Belmont returns 19 players that were active on the 2018 roster. Along with the returners, 12 talented newcomers join the program for the 2019 season. 


This series will mark the second time the Bruins have opened its season with a home series against Illinois State with the Redbirds coming to Nashville to open the 2016 season. In the past meeting, Belmont took the series 2-1 defeating Illinois State on Friday and Sunday. Dating back to 2005, Belmont leads the all-time series 9-5 with all meetings coming under the direction of Head Coach Dave Jarvis.  


Senior Casey Queener (Brentwood, Tenn.) was named to the 2019 Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference Baseball team prior to the season. Last season, Queener had a breakout year on the bump as a regular weekend starter. The most dependable force on the mound for the Bruins, Queener earned a team-high 14 starts last season and struck out 96 batters in 85.1 innings of work. Opponents hit just .239 against him for an ERA of 4.22. He threw his first career complete game, shutting out conference foe Austin Peay, striking out 12 batters, scattering only three hits and walking just one.


Last season, four Bruins earned postseason honors. Pitchers Casey Queener (Second Team All-OVC), Kyle Brennan (ALL-OVC Freshman Team) and Logan Bowen (ALL-OVC Freshman Team) will all return for the 2019 season. Matt Cogen was named to the All-OVC First Team but will not return this season after being taken in the 2018 MLB Draft. In addition, Brennan was named to the 2018 Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American team as a relief pitcher after an impressive freshman campaign.  


Two members of the 2018 Belmont Baseball roster were chosen in the 2018 MLB Draft. Starting pitcher Dylan King was picked in the 18th round by the Los Angeles Angels and Outfielder Matt Cogen was selected in the 30th round by the LA Dodgers. 


Sophomore Kyle Brennan (Franklin, Tenn.) has been named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year watchlist. The national list has 75 total athletes with four from the OVC. Last season Brennan appeared in 28 games and recorded a 2.83 ERA in 47.2 innings of work.


BU will play 33 of its 55 games in the friendly confines of E.S. Rose Park this season. The Bruins will start the season with a home-heavy campaign, playing 15 of its first 16 games at home. In addition to its home games, Belmont will play 13 of its road games in its home state of Tennessee.
