Student-Athlete Alumni Spotlight -- Greg Firek

Student-Athlete Alumni Spotlight -- Greg Firek

Greg Firek played baseball for Belmont from 1985-1989.  Competing as a pitcher and as an outfielder, Firek helped the Rebels earn 95 wins over four years and was a member of the last baseball team to play their games on campus.  The Firek name lives on at Belmont today as his daughter MacKenzie is a sophomore on the women’s soccer team.  Greg recently spoke with about his time at Belmont and his present life as a husband, father and Belmont women’s soccer fan.

Why did you choose Belmont?

I grew up in Brentwood and Belmont provided an opportunity to play baseball and receive an excellent education.

What is your fondest athletic memory at Belmont?

Playing the last game on Whitten Field.  The field was located on in the middle of campus, today it’s difficult to visualize where it was located given all the growth that has occurred on campus.

Who had the biggest influence on you during your athletic career at Belmont and how?

Coach Dave Whitten, he was a good baseball man but also cared for everyone off the field.  He always made sure we had an opportunity to be successful on as well as off the field.

What is the most valuable thing you gained or learned from your time at Belmont?

Teamwork, learning how to contribute within a large group of individuals working toward a common goal has served me well as I have progressed through my career.

What advice would you give to current members of the baseballl team?

Enjoy your time at Belmont on the baseball field but don’t overlook the educational opportunities available at Belmont.

Who was your favorite professor and why?

Dave Whitten because he took a genuine interest in me and my long-term success.

Where do you live now?

Brentwood, TN

What is your occupation?

I work at Regions Bank, where I am a Regional Fiduciary Manager.  I coach and assist team members to provide trust and wealth management services to our bank clients.

Tell us about your family.

My wife Wendy and I have been married for 21 years and have two children; MacKenzie and Jacob.  MacKenzie is beginning her Sophomore year at Belmont and Jacob is beginning his Junior year at Ravenwood High School.  Our dog Scout is 2 years old and the most energetic member of our family.
