NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University Athletics, along with all of collegiate athletics and the entire nation, celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX. The celebration commemorates the anniversary of the landmark federal law signed in 1972 that prohibits gender discrimination in educational programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance.
Thursday, June 23 is the official 50-year anniversary of Title IX being signed into law. Title IX is part of the Education Amendments of 1972 and states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
Thanks to the efforts of Betty Wiseman, a true trailblazer in women's sports, Belmont has enjoyed over 50 years of women's sports. Setting Belmont apart from others in the college landscape, the university has been competing in women's sports since 1968 when Wiseman founded the women's basketball program.
2022 marks the 54th year of women's sports at Belmont with the upcoming women's basketball season representing the Bruins' 54th season.
A former student, coach, professor and athletics administrator, Wiseman is the matriarch of women's hoops at Belmont and has been an outstanding ambassador for the university. Founding one of the first women's basketball programs in the Southeast, Wiseman was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 after her induction into the Belmont Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981. Her singular vision in 1968 gave rise to generations of triumphs on and off the court/field of play.
During Belmont's March Madness run at the 2022 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament in Knoxville, Tennessee, this March, Wiseman spoke on how it all began, the impact of Title IX and what Title IX means to her.
The NCAA's dedicated website as part of the anniversary promotion, Title IX at 50, is available at NCAA.org/TitleIX50.
