Emily Cahill Lusk '09 played volleyball for the Bruins from 2005-2008 and was a part of the two teams that made their mark on the history of not only the volleyball program but the enire athletic program at Belmont.

During her time as a Bruin, Emily played in 309 sets, was a three-time All-Conference selection, and set the school record for highest career hitting percentage (.337).  She also helped the program win 91 matches, capture two Atlantic Sun championships, and advance to the school's first two NCAA Tournaments.

Recently, Emily spoke to about her time both on and off the court at Belmont and her present life as a wife and mother in suburban Cincinnati.

Why did you choose Belmont?

Belmont had so much more to offer than just the opportunity to grow as an athlete. It offered a wonderful education, a community of friends and teammates who I still consider family and an incredible city to explore.

What is your fondest athletic memory at Belmont?

2008 NCAA Tournament -- We played Hawaii at USC. To be able to travel the country playing volleyball against the best of the best was incredible. Ending my career at Belmont on the national stage with my best friends, and my family watching was the perfect exclamation point to a wonderful four years.

Also, the dance parties—we had some epic pre and post game locker room dance parties!

Who had the biggest influence on you during your athletic career at Belmont and how?

Assistant Coach Tony Howell. Tony was instrumental in, not only our success on the court, but in our education as well. The transition to college student athlete can be difficult, but Tony always kept us on track and always had our best interest in mind.

What is the most valuable thing you gained or learned from your time at Belmont?

The friendships. The girls who started as my teammates are now women who I am so proud to call my best friends. Though we all live in separate states (and countries!) we try and get together at least once a year and have a group text where we talk a few times a week. Even beyond my teammates, there are a few friendships that started at Belmont that I am so grateful to still have today.

What advice would you give to current members of the volleyball team?

Be open to the opportunities that present themselves, even if it's out of your comfort zone.

Who was your favorite professor and why?

Professor Sue Trout! Her enthusiasm for English and literature is contagious! She has a way of explaining even the most complex literature in a way that everyone can understand and relate to.

Where do you live now?

Northern Kentucky, five minutes outside of Cincinnati, Ohio.

What is your occupation?

I work for St. Elizabeth Foundation as the Manager of Special Events. I manage the fundraising events for the St. Elizabeth Healthcare system. This involves our major galas, golf outings, donor events and community fundraisers.

Tell us about your family.

In 2019 I married a former Bison! I met Michael in 2006 while he played basketball at Lipscomb. We had our beautiful baby girl Mia in 2020 and have another little one on the way!
