Alumni Spotlight -- Katie Rhodes

Katie Rhodes
Katie Rhodes

Katie Rhodes played tennis for Belmont from 2004-2008.  The Tuscaloosa, Alabama native currently ranks in the top-10 in Belmont's Division I era in career singles wins and career conference singles wins.  She also was a three-time Atlantic Sun All-Academic performer and helped lead the program to 33 wins and a spot in the Atlantic Sun Semifinals in 2007.  She recently spoke to about her time at Belmont and current life as a dietician in Asheville, North Carolina.

Why did you choose Belmont?

I chose Belmont for several reasons.  Mainly, for their strong academic reputation, but I came for a campus visit a really got along with Coach Mark Srouji and the team and they really made me feel at home.  Plus, I really loved Nashville.

What is your fondest athletic memory at Belmont?

So many!  However, if I had to narrow it down to one I would say probably my junior year at the conference tournament when we beat Campbell University in the quarterfinals.  They were always our biggest rivals and we finally beat them that year and if felt so good.

Who had the biggest influence on you during your athletic career at Belmont? How?

She probably does not even remember me because she does so much and has helped so many athletes throughout so many years, but definitely, Colette Keyser, Assistant AD for Sport Operations.  I swear this lady knew when my grades where slipping before I did and would call me up and before I knew it, I had a tutor and was back on track!  No messing around.  Being on the road so much with tennis can be challenging to keep grades up, but I was so very grateful for Colette's assistance throughout my years out Belmont.  It's funny, when I went back to school four years later to pursue a different degree, I had to keep reminding myself there was no Colette there and I was all on my own.

What is the most valuable thing you gained or learned from your time at Belmont?

Balance.  Learning how to juggle athletics, time with friends, school, being in a sorority (well for two years), and family can be challenging.  However, it taught me a lot about time management and life skills that I still practice daily.

What advice would you give to current members of the tennis team?

Learn as many curse words in different languages as possible.  That way when an opponent from another Country starts yelling at you, you can have a fun little banter.  Just kidding.  Slow down, (not on the court) in life.  Those four years flew by for me and I wish would have taken the time to have been more present for each match, road trip, conference, team dinner, etc.  Enjoy this time with your teammates.

Where do you live now?

Asheville, North Carolina
