NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont Volleyball hits the road for its final non-conference tournament of the season, traveling south to compete in the Maverick Invitational, hosted by UT Arlington, September 14-15. The Bruins (0-9) will face off against first-time opponents Grand Canyon (6-3) and Sam Houston State (5-4) before taking on host-UTA (4-3).
First-time opponent Grand Canyon has won three of its last five outings to stand at 6-3 overall heading into this weekend's tournament. The Lopes are led in kills by Annabelle Kubinski and Kaira Moss who have recorded 86 apiece. Kayla Redfield has tallied 230 assists to lead the team while Teagan DeFalco has notched 169 digs to head up the defensive effort.
The weekend's other first time opponent, Sam Houston State, brings a 5-4 mark to the Maverick Invitational. Taylor Cunningham leads the team in kills with a total of 99 while Jaclyn Ward leads the team in assists after collecting 205. Madison Wallace and Cunningham lead the way defensively with 105 and 100 digs, respectively.
The host Mavericks enter their home tournament in the midst of a four-match win streak to stand at 4-3 overall. UTA is led in kills by Madison Hill and Zhanelle Geathers, who had tallied 62 and 61, respectively. Alex Janek leads the team in assists with a total of 116 while Madelyn St Germain leads in digs with a total of 111.
Belmont leads the all-time series, 2-0, after winning the last meeting in Nashville during the 2017 Bruiser Showcase, 3-2.
BU will look to post its first win in non-conference play with this weekend's tournament. Senior Maggie Mullins (Nashville, Tenn.) leads the Bruins in kills with a total of 70 followed by sophomores Halee Van Poppel (Argyle, Texas) and Mackenzie LePage (Franklin, Tenn.) who have contributed 45 and 41, respectively, so far. Freshman Carly Mason (Forsyth, Ill.) leads in assists with a total of 197. Mason also leads in digs with a total of 62.
