Tuned up for conference

HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – After a slow first day, the Belmont University women's indoor track and field team set six personal records Saturday to close out the Marshall Chipotle Invitational in fifth place with 48 team points.

Two PRs each came in the 400 and 3,000 meters, and freshman Payton Barlow continued her strong start to her Belmont career in the middle distance race.

Barlow ran a PR time of 57.40 to place third in the 400 and she now owns the top times in both the 400 and 200 among Belmont women this season.

Fellow freshman Caroline Pruitt (Allen, Texas) finished eighth in a PR 59.58, and the pair teamed up with sophomore Katrina Quigley (Nashville, Tenn.) and junior Annelise Doerr (Fountain Valley, Calif.) for a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay. The Bruins' time of 3:54.71 is their fastest of the season.

Sophomore Sierra Lax (Columbus, Ind.) knocked off 5 seconds to set a PR in the 3,000 in 10:20.97 while running to eighth place, and freshman Claire Cheeseman (Brentwood, Tenn.) set her own personal best in the event in 10:29.87 to take 12th.

Belmont's only other top-three finish came in the high jump where third-place junior Hannah Beth Moorhouse (Morristown, Tenn.) leaped 1.62 meters (5-3.75) for her best mark of the season.

Junior Karly Hibbard (Edmonds, Wash.) was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 13.11 meters, her best since having off season surgery.

The Belmont coaching staff looked at the Marshall meet as the final tune-up for the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships, the next meet on the calendar. The Bruins head to Charleston, Ill., for conference on Feb. 23-24 feeling good about their progress so far this season.

"We wanted to see mental focus, execution of race plans and good team support, and the staff was pretty happy with how the team responded this weekend," Associate Head Track and Field Coach Cameron Harvey said. "Hopefully we can keep this momentum going for the next two weeks before we head to the indoor championships."
