NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University women's soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to Lipscomb in exhibition play Friday night.
The Bruins outshot the Lady Bisons, 10-3, but two unfortunate plays led to shots from distance finding the back of the net for the visitors.
In the ninth minute, Belmont sophomore goalkeeper Lily Herman (Springboro, Ohio) confidently played the ball with her feet outside the 18. However, her subsequent clearance went directly to the feet of All-Atlantic Sun forward Ellen Lundy, who chipped the keeper from some 35 yards out for the match's first tally.
Belmont got strong midfield play from senior Tara Austin (Beaumont, Texas) and junior Emily Whitcomb (Elmhurst, Ill.) to threaten an equalizer, but Lipscomb goalkeeper Kate Mason was up to the challenge.
Late in the first half, Lipscomb scored a second goal as a free kick service from Natalie Duboise bounced back outside the box to the waiting boot of Hannah Torbett, whose strike snuck under the bar.
Freshman Julie Garst (Franklin, Tenn.) saw her first action in a Bruin uniform and provided great pace. Her cross to junior Megan Michela (Carol Stream, Ill.) near post midway through the second half almost yielded a goal.
Freshman Abby Hunt (Surrey, B.C., Canada) recorded a clean sheet in the second 45.
Belmont returns to exhibition play Sunday, Aug. 13 vs. Chattanooga. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT.
