NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University men's track and field team will be competing at both the Virginia Challenge and the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend April 21-22.
Three Belmont athletes will be competing at the Virginia challenge, hosted by the University of Virginia, amongst over 50 schools and 1,100 athletes. Distance runners sophomore Ben Weisel (Nashville, Tenn.), freshman Matt Edwards (Glamorgan, Wales, UK), and sophomore Kaleb McLeod (Soperton, Ga.) will represent the Bruins in Charlottesville. All three athletes will compete on Saturday night at the Lannigan Field.
The remainder of the Belmont contingency will travel to Atlanta, Ga. to compete in the Georgia Tech Invitational. The Bruins will be competing against conference rivals Tennessee State and SEMO. Other notable entries include Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Western Kentucky, and Lipscomb.
Competition will begin on Friday. April 21 at 11 a.m. Central time with the hammer throw and Saturday at 11 a.m. with the high jump at the George C. Griffin Track.
Last weekend the Bruins competed at the Austin Peay State University Invitational. Sophomore Braden Carei (Uniontown, Pa.) continued his impressive season breaking a Belmont school record in the pole vault with a mark of 4.75 meters which also gave him the gold medal finish.
Another school record was broken in the high jump when senior Jacob Spalding (Franklin, Tenn.) boasted a jump of 1.98 meters.
The Bruins boasted another first place finish in the 1500 meter run as Edwards notched a personal best with a time of 3:51.76.
After his historic performance, Carei was recognized as the OVC Male Field Athlete of the Week this past Wednesday.
Following this weekend's competition, the Bruins will next take the track at the Billy Hayes Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
