Men’s Track and Field Finishes Sixth at A-Sun Indoor Championships
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Belmont men's track and field team battled through tough competition to finish sixth overall at the 2012 Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships. The Bruins wrapped the two-day championships with 37 points, collecting 10 top-15 finishes.
In the Heptathlon, sophomore Tyler Newkirk (Atchison, Kan.) finished eighth with 3,800 points. His best finish over the two days in the event was sixth in the 60m with a time of 7.51.
Sophomore Erick Kigen (Eldoret, Kenya) was one of BU's top placer on the day, taking fourth in the Mile with a time of 4:14.24. Junior Josh Helton (Franklin, Tenn.) finished ninth (4:28.40) in the event. In the 5000m, sophomore Matt Miller (LaPorte, Ind.) finished fourth, crossing the finish line in 15:06.53. Junior Brandon Mahaney (Lafayette, Tenn.) was eighth in the event with a time of 15:16.45.
Belmont's 4x400m relay team of Helton, sophomore Caleb Darnell (Lafayette, Tenn.), Gibson and freshman David Everett (St. Louis, Mo.) took sixth with a time of 3:32.42.
Freshman Kurtis Gibson (Highbridge, England) grabbed a seventh-place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:55.87.
In the field events, freshman Zach Hughes (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) finished sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 13.61m.
Belmont returns to action on March 9 at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
