Alex Renfroe Named Atlantic Sun Player of the Year

March 3, 2009

MACON, GA. - - Belmont University men's basketball senior Alex Renfroe (Hermitage, Tenn.) has been named 2009 Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year, the league announced Tuesday.

Picking up right where he left off after his dazzling display in the 2008 NCAA Tournament against three-time National Champion Duke, Renfroe showcased consistency and a vast all-around game in leading the Bruins this season.

The 6-2 point guard finished the regular season ranked in the Top 10 in the Atlantic Sun in a whopping eight categories. Renfroe was first in assists (4.86), fourth in field goal percentage (.563), fourth in steals (2.24), fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.32), seventh in scoring (16.3), seventh in defensive rebounds (4.59), ninth in rebounding (6.7) and 10th in offensive rebounds (2.14).

The Hermitage, Tenn. native recorded 23 double figure scoring games - including 14 consecutive to close the regular season - and nine games of 20 or more points. Renfroe also had six double-doubles from the point guard position.

Moreover, Renfroe is one of only two players in all of college basketball to lead his team in scoring, rebounding, assists and field goal percentage. He ranks second in the nation in rebounding among all point guards, trailing only Manny Harris of Michigan.

A two-time Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honoree, Renfroe delivered one of the great individual performances in Belmont history Feb. 28 vs. Jacksonville, scoring a Curb Event Center record 38 points, while adding 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals.

He also scored 30 points at then 16th ranked Tennessee.

"Alex Renfroe is the most exciting basketball player that I have seen in a Belmont uniform," Belmont head coach Rick Byrd said. "Being chosen as the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year is a tremendous accomplishment; our team and entire Belmont community are happy for Alex. We are appreciative of the recognition shown by the voters. Alex is an outstanding young man and a great representative of our university."

Renfroe joins Adam Sonn (2003) as the second Belmont player to be so honored.

The Bruins (18-11) return to action Thursday afternoon in the Atlantic Sun Tournament Quarterfinals against Mercer. Tip-off is set for 2:30 pm CT from Lipscomb University's Allen Arena.

All the live play-by-play action with Voice of the Bruins Kevin Ingram can be heard on the Bruin Sports Network. Live video streaming will be provided via ASun.TV.
