NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With the 2018 Major League Baseball campaign underway, Belmont baseball has six former Bruins – Drew Ferguson, James Buckeles, Austin Coley, Matt Beaty, Jamie Ritchie, and Aaron Quillen - participating with various pro teams affiliated clubs this year.
Drew Ferguson – Fresno Grizzlies
Drew Ferguson (2015) is currently on the roster of the Fresno Grizzlies, the AAA affiliate of the Houston Astros. The center fielder has played in eight games this season. He has recorded 12 hits in 29 at-bats, scoring five runs and six RBI. Ferguson spent part of the 2017 season as a member of the AA Corpus Christi Hooks team before being called up to the Grizzlies. He played in 113 total games last year, finishing with a .275 batting average, recording 114 hits, 66 runs, 41 RBI and 66 runs. He boasted a .621 slugging percentage. Ferguson was selected in the 19th round by the Houston Astros in 2015.
James Buckelew – New Orleans Baby Cakes
James Buckelew (2014) has been promoted to the AAA New Orleans Baby Cakes after spending the 2017 season with the Jupiter Hammerheads and the AA Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp of the Miami Marlins system. The left-handed hurler appeared in 31 games last season, earning 10 starts. He pitched 96.1 innings, finishing the season with a 2.52 ERA. Buckelew has appeared in three games this season, all in relief. He has earned one win in eight innings pitched. The Belmont pitcher was selected in the 2014 MLB draft.
Austin Coley – Indianapolis Indians
Austin Coley (2014) has been called up to the AAA Indianapolis Indians, a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate, after spending the 2017 campaign as a member of the AA Altoona Curve. Last season, Coley made 29 appearances with 23 of them being starts. He finished 2017 with a record of 6-4 and an ERA of 3.01. Coley has earned one start this season. Coley was selected in the eighth round of the 2014 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Matt Beaty -- Oklahoma City Dodgers
Matt Beaty (2015), who was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in the 12thround in 2015, has been called up to the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers after an impressive 2017 campaign with the Double-A Tulsa Drillers. Last season, Beaty was named one of the top 30 prospects in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization He became the first player in Tulsa Drillers history to earn Texas League Player of the Year honors in 2017. Beaty boasted a .378 batting average, recording 143 hits, 61 runs, and 69 RBI. In his final 15 games of the season, he batted .373 while boasting a 13-game hitting streak to finish out the season.
Jamie Ritchie – Corpus Christie Hooks
Jamie Ritchie (2014) is currently playing for his second season as a member of the Houston Astros Double-A affiliate Corpus Christie Hooks. Ritchie saw action in 76 games during the 2017 season, finishing with a .256 batting average, recording 62 hits, 27 runs, and 20 RBI. He has appeared in six games this season, tallying 3 hits, 3 RBI, and 4 runs. The Belmont catcher was selected in the 13th round (No. 376 overall) in 2014.
Aaron Quillen – Daytona Tortugas
Aaron Quillen (2016) is currently playing in the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds as he is working back from injury after being drafted in the 22nd round of the 2016 draft. Last season, Quillen played for three teams, ultimately finishing the season with the Daytona Tortugas. Last season, the right-handed pitcher started two games and made 15 relief appearances finishing with a 2-0 record.
Tyler Walsh -- Arizona Angels
Tyler Walsh (2017) spent the 2017 season as a member of the Rookie League Arizona Angels. He will sit out the 2018 season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.
